Louisiana launches HIE for seven hospitals
The Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange (HIE), which includes 24 hospitals in the northern part of the state, went live last week on an integrated open systems platform that will enable teleconsultation among the hospitals.

Seven of the 24 members of the Louisiana Rural Hospital Coalition are participating in the first year: Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi; Homer Memorial Hospital in Homer; Union General Hospital in Farmerville; LaSalle General Hospital in Jena; Hardtner Medical Center in Olla; DeSoto Regional Health System in Mansfield; and Bunkie General Hospital in Bunkie.

Carefx of Scottsdale, Ariz., has developed the platform with CA, IBM and Initiate Systems.

The hospitals will be linked to one another and with the Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, La.

“This eHealth initiative will have a tremendous impact on our communities,” said Louisiana Sen. Francis Thompson. “LSU physicians' access to rural patient information combined with the telemedicine services will not only provide patients with easy access to specialists' care, but they will also reduce the often prohibitive costs and logistics associated with receiving such care.”

The platform employs a federated model that offers clinicians secure access to a portal-based view of patient-centric data housed in disparate applications across multiple hospitals, according to the Louisiana Rural HIE.
