GE scores contracts for CZT-SPECT systems
GE Healthcare has installed four of its new cadmium zinc telluride (CZT)-based Discovery NM 530c nuclear cardiology cameras featuring Alcyone technology at U.S. and international facilities.

The systems were deployed at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City; Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Ontario; University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland; and the Gabriele Monasterio Foundation in Pisa, Italy, GE said.

Alcyone technology is based on combining CZT detectors, focused pin-hole collimation, stationary data acquisition and 3D reconstruction, to improve SPECT workflow, dose management and image quality, according to GE. CZT detectors convert gamma rays into digital signals, eliminating the need for photomultiplier tubes, but maintaining high stopping power, the company added.

Alcyone's focused multi-pinhole collimation has been positioned to view cardiac anatomy and pathology, resulting in scan times as short as three minutes, GE said. Unlike conventional nuclear imaging, all views are acquired simultaneously during a stationary SPECT acquisition, eliminating equipment movement during the scan.
