Imaging the World nabs Gates grant
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded Imaging the World (ITW) a Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) grant.

Co-founders of Charlotte, Vt.-based ITW, Kristen DeStigter, MD, and Brian Garra, MD, will pursue a global health and development research project, titled “Low-Cost Sustainable Solution for Rural Ultrasound.”

DeStigter and Garra, along with the ITW team, are developing a low-cost scalable model leveraging technology, education and community outreach to bring ultrasound diagnoses to pregnant women in areas of high maternal/neonatal mortality. By giving advance warning of critical maternal conditions, this model will improve maternal/fetal morbidity and mortality on a grand scale, according to the developer of medical procedures and technologies to enable medical imaging in remote areas around the world.

Seattle-based GCE funds scientists and researchers worldwide to explore ideas that can help solve global health and development challenges. The ITW project is one of over 85 grants awarded by the foundation.
