Radiology’s showcase conference—The 93rd Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)—kept the Windy City hopping for its five-day run in late November. The show is nothing short of massive, with almost 62,000 people in all attending, some 210 scientific papers being presented, as well as 1,497 education exhibits, 257 refresher courses and 591 scientific posters. Almost 800 vendors showcased hundreds of new products, services and enhancements.

Quality and safety improvement, cost containment, avoidance of radiology commoditization, IT-powered efficiency, pay for performance, cardiac imaging and molecular imaging are themes that emerged from the educational sessions, while new CT systems and image management solutions were the big draws on the exhibition floor. Demonstrations by the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) initiative aimed to empower radiologists in the expanding EHR environment and enable them to create and manage digital teaching files more easily. RSNA for sure is tracking healthcare’s evolution from a curative model to a pre-emptive model—and supporting the practice of radiology’s quest to interpret, manage and keep ahead of more quantitative and volumetric data and in close partnership with other disciplines.
