Two sponsors join HL7 for SOA healthcare workshop
SOA Consortium and SOA and Object Management Group, two IT consortiums, will join Health Level Seven (HL7) in sponsoring a conference designed to focus on using service oriented architecture (SOA) in healthcare.

SOA is an application architecture that creates interfaces via a series of repeatable tasks or processes. The interfaces are platform independent and can coexist with processes already working within an application. In healthcare, SOA may improve system flexibility and optimize workflows throughout the enterprise.

The conference, "SOA in Healthcare: Realizing Quality of Care, Business Value and Delivery on IT's Promise," will be held April 15-17 in Chicago, and will feature presentations on successes and lessons learned from various healthcare initiatives using SOA, including those related to care quality.

Speakers will include healthcare providers, payors, public healthcare organizations, vendors and pharmaceutical companies. Some sessions also will feature initiatives from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Coordinator for Health IT, Intermountain Healthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

The other sponsoring groups are the SOA Consortium, an advocacy group of users, service providers and technology vendors committed to helping businesses adopt SOA and Object Management Group, an international not-for-profit computer industry consortium. Both groups are based in Needham, Mass.
