The Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute in Boca Raton, Fla., has deployed the AccuBoost breast cancer radiotherapy system.

Patients who select a breast conservation therapy option to treat their cancer typically undergo a lumpectomy. Following lumpectomy, most patients undergo whole breast irradiation, which includes a "boost" phase.

The boost dose is delivered to the tissue adjacent to the surgical excision site, a region from which most recurrences originate. The added boost dose to the surgical margin has been shown to provide additional protection against recurrence, according to the Billerica, Mass.-based AccuBoost.

The AccuBoost system is an image-guided radiation therapy technique that uses non-invasive high-dose rate brachytherapy to deliver a focused dose to the lumpectomy site. By directly and precisely targeting the treatment area, patients who have used the AccuBoost system also have less reddening of the skin, the company said.

The Lynn Cancer Institute treats more than 3,000 patients annually and has facilities in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach.
