ACR lung cancer registry receives CMS approval

The American College of Radiology (ACR) Lung Cancer Screening Registry has become the first such registry approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

With the approval, providers can now submit data on lung cancer screenings to the registry, a requirement to receive reimbursement from Medicare.

“The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Registry is ready to help providers quickly and efficiently meet Medicare reporting requirements and monitor and demonstrate the quality of CT lung cancer screening in their practice,” said Ella Kazerooni, MD, FACR, chair of the American College of Radiology Lung Cancer Screening Committee and ACR Thoracic Imaging Panel, in a statement. “The ACR registry will also compile quality information that can help improve and refine lung cancer screening care over time at the national level.”

The ACR added that its new registry is part of the ACR National Radiology Data Registry that CMS has recognized for the Physician Quality Reporting System.

On Feb. 5, CMS officially approved Medicare coverage of low-dose CT lung cancer screening for high risk patients.
