The Mayo Clinic has installed a prototype MRI brain scanner from GE that’s one-third the size of—and 10 times lighter than—standard MR scanners. Yet, despite its diminutive footprint, the machine totes a powerful 3-T magnet.
“Because of its smaller size, it doesn’t use as much electricity and there aren’t the ‘speed limits’ that exist on whole-body scanners,” medical physicist Matthew Bernstein, PhD, tells Twin Cities Business. “The really interesting thing will be to figure out how to take advantage of the higher-speed software.”
Neuroradiologist John Huston III, MD, adds that there’s “a lot of excitement here as we jump in and actually begin doing the research.”
