The vendor also demonstrated the benefits of converting speech-recognized text into structured information for improved decision support and as a basis for automated information capturing in the electronic health record (EHR). In addition, for an all-too-often overlooked segment of the caregiver spectrum, the firm unveiled a point-of-care reporting solution for nurses in cooperation with VoiceViewer Technologies.

Philips’ radiology IT solutions – iSite PACS and XIRIS – were spotlighted and feature proprietary technology, iSyntax, which enables efficient delivery of clinical information throughout the enterprise.

The latest iteration of Philips iSite PACS feature advanced visualization capabilities that are completely integrated into the PACS workflow and provide additional diagnostic information through clinically relevant visualization anywhere throughout the enterprise, the company said. Fully interactive, real-time volumetric reading tools (and Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP), Multi-Planar Reformatting (MPR), 3D) are delivered to the PACS workstation, which brings advanced rendering performance and scalability without additional cost and complexities.

iSite PACS also provides all tools required to perform soft-copy screening and reading of mammography exams, including: configurable keyboard shortcuts, keypad support, advanced hanging protocols, hanging protocols sequencing, step zoom tool, magnifying glass, as well as the receipt and display of computer-assisted detection (CAD) markers.

In addition, Philips introduced new advanced clinical applications at HIMSS. The vendor demonstrated three 3D clinical applications, which are completely integrated with the latest version of Philips iSite PACS and will be offered as add-on options. These are Philips iSite Volume Vision along with work-in-progress solutions, Philips iSite Pulmonary Embolism Assessment and Philips iSite CT Colonography.

The iSite Volume Vision tool offers an extended, high-speed, fully integrated 3D advanced visualization toolset to improve diagnostic efficiency. The iSite Pulmonary Embolism Assessment application helps physicians identify hard-to-find and dangerous thrombus in lung vessels, while iSite CT Colonography is a 3D application for colon polyp identification in CT data sets.

XIRIS is a web-based RIS that can scale to meet the needs of community hospitals as well as large, multiple-facility hospitals. XIRIS also provides an international and multilingual solution.  XIRIS is designed to manage patient registration, scheduling, exam tracking, staff and resource management, eligibility and verification, medical necessity and the generation of reports and statistical information, the company said.

Philips Healthcare displayed its comprehensive cardiovascular IT solutions that support enterprise connectivity, multimodality image management, advanced clinical applications, clinical reporting, outcomes-based analysis reporting, cath lab management and cardiovascular ultrasound reporting, multimodality scheduling, inventory and extensive data management. Furthermore, Philips offers an array of services to help healthcare providers monitor patients’ post-discharge from their home environments.

Philips’ newly enhanced Xcelera Cardiology Information Solution organizes and provides access to images and data from key cardiology subspecialties. The system presents one access point to multimodality information, such as cardiovascular ultrasound, CT, MR, nuclear medicine, ECG and electrophysiology recording signals, as well as provides long-term storage and enterprise distribution of multimedia studies.

In the cardiac cath lab, the Philips portfolio includes the new Xper Information Management cardiovascular solution. This product delivers the physiological monitoring, reporting, scheduling, inventory management and data mining cath lab that clinicians and physicians requested.

In addition, Philips provides extensive interface capabilities to ensure integration with EHR, hospital information systems (HIS), and other vendors’ systems.

Philips extends the support of the cardiac care continuum into the home with remote patient monitoring solutions. Philips Home Healthcare Solutions include a comprehensive offering of Telehealth products and services for post-hospital discharge monitoring of patients with congestive heart failure and other chronic diseases. Together with Philips Lifeline, and the recently acquired Raytel Cardiac Services’ diagnostic arrhythmia and implanted device follow up services, these solutions aim to improve the quality of life for at-risk seniors, the chronically ill, and their caregivers by enabling independent living at home.

The company highlighted its recent acquisitions, Emergin and Visicu.

Emergin’s alarm management and event notification software helps ensure that critical information is sent to the right caregiver, at the right time, on the personal communication device of their choice –an alpha pager, wireless telephone, PDA or LED sign, the company said.

The IntelliVue Clinical Information Portfolio (ICIP) for critical care environments provides multi-disciplinary clinical decision support and documentation for the initial point of care.

Designed for use in the adult, pediatric and neonatal ICU environment, ICIP Critical Care drives real-time clinical decision support with multi-parameter clinical advisories.
Clinical advisories point out potential problems early—before they have a chance to develop. Signs of sepsis, for example, trigger an advisory that also references the bundle of interventions recommended by the international Surviving Sepsis campaign.
A drag-and-drop interface allows users to build tables and charts without extensive training. Additionally, automated reports help meet regulatory mandates.

The CompuRecord Anesthesia Information System enhances pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative anesthesia care. The pre-operative assessment automatically incorporates clinical data from current and prior visits, and makes patient information easily available to others on the care team.

An automated intra-operative anesthesia record helps free clinician time to focus on the patient while automatically capturing quality assurance measures, supplies usage, and billing data. A patient tracking module ensures timely information on patient status and location is available to clinicians and family members.

The firm spotlighted OB TraceVue, a patient-focused obstetrical information system that provides a comprehensive clinical record of care for the mother and newborn. Surveillance functions present information that is transmitted from fetal and fetal/ maternal monitors and generate alerts for critical events.

OB TraceVue can be accessed from the patient bedside and delivery room, central station, nurse’s lounge, and physician’s home or office. The system can also help caregivers manage legal liability issues by storing comprehensive patient information, including traces, on long-lasting magneto-optical media. Optical storage media can store data for up to 30 years according to the accelerated lifetime tests of the media manufacturer.

Philips FIMI demonstrated its CliniScape mobile clinical assistant (MCA), a new category of mobile point-of-care devices that allows nurses and physicians to wirelessly access patient data and clinical applications.

Based on Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC edition, an Intel Core Solo CPU with a 60GB hard-disk, WLAN 802.11b/g/n capabilities, and a 10.4-inch XGA touch-screen with digitizer, the MCA combines a number of features on a single platform, including:
  • An RFID reader for user-authentication and identification of patients, medication, blood containers and other clinical specimens;
  • An optional built-in barcode scanner to support bar-code based identification protocols;
  • Bluetooth for cordless connection of devices such as a heartbeat or blood-pressure sensor, telephone headset or dictation microphone;
  • A 2-megapixel camera for on-line capture of digital pictures of patient wounds; and
  • Medical-grade compliance to allow its use in clinical areas where traditional laptops or tablet PCs are not allowed.
Designed as a semi-sealed device (IP54), the CliniScape MCA can be wiped clean with disinfectant to reduce the spread of infection. A long-life battery (3.5 hour minimum) can be swapped with a fresh one in the docking station without disrupting applications currently in use. The grab-and-go docking station comes with three USB ports and one Ethernet jack to allow the MCA to be used as a desktop device while docked.

Also on display at this year’s HIMSS, Philips FIMI showcased ProScribe a wireless, low-cost and lightweight (1.75 kg) mobile point-of-care unit. The device features thin-client capabilities on a 12-inch finger-tip XGA touchscreen display, disk and fan-less architecture, a secure embedded operating system (Windows XPe), a write-protected file system (1 gigabyte CF memory), an embedded smart card reader, a water-resistant casing and silent operation.
