Medical imaging is on the cutting edge of technology—but scientists are using CT scans to learn more about the prehistoric.
Researchers have used CT scans to examine a 400-million-year-old fossil. According to 3DPrinting.com, a team from Australian National University took high-resolution CT scans of the fossil. They then made 3D prints to reassemble the jaw. The team could study grooves in the fossil where blood vessels once were. They were even able to determine the direction of blood flow in some major arteries, said Gavin Young with ANU.
