Everyone has waited in long airport security lines only to get stuck behind a passenger who forgets to remove her laptop from the bag or leaves his shoes on. Now, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is testing CT technology that could alter the way we travel.

First reported by Axios, CT would provide TSA officers 3D images of baggage as it travelled down the security line conveyor belt. The advanced imaging would also allow for detection of lower weights of explosive devices, and potentially passengers could leave items such as laptops and water in bags.

This year the administration is expected to begin experimenting with the technology.

“TSA expects to purchase up to 40 units to be used for testing and demonstration purposes,” said Michael Bilello, assistant administrator of TSA to Axios. "Demonstration and Operational Testing units will be placed in airports around the country, while 12 testing units will be distributed amongst testing facilities.”
