Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has pledged millions toward government funding that will develop a "new weapon"—artificial intelligence (AI) able to improve cancer and chronic disease diagnosis, the Guardian reported on May 20.
May wants various U.K. industries and charities to work with NHS England to develop AI algorithms that can use patient data to warn physicians when patients should seek additional care from specialists and analyze imaging exams to identify malignant tumors.
“The development of smart technologies to analyze great quantities of data quickly and with a higher degree of accuracy than is possible by human beings opens up a whole new field of medical research and gives us a new weapon in our armory in the fight against disease," May said, according to The Guardian.
May and others believe AI could help prevent 22,000 deaths from cancer by 2033 in the U.K., while giving patients an additional five years of healthy, independent life by 2035.
