Survey: Consumers optimistic on AI—and its value, convenience, time savings

While radiologists grapple with the future of artificial intelligence (AI), consumers report liking AI’s convenience, time savings and personalized insights, according to a recent Accenture consumer survey on digital health.

The online questionnaire surveyed 2,301 U.S. adults, with an average age of 46 years old.

While only 19 percent reported having an AI interaction related to health (65 percent said they had not), 71 percent said they were satisfied with the experience.

Consumers are adopting technology that streamlines processes or decisions once completed by humans. A majority claimed they would likely use an at-home blood analysis device that could test for multiple indicators (66 percent), followed by an intelligent virtual health assistant (61 percent).

Consumers indicated they would use AI because it’s available whenever they need it (47 percent). Interestingly, more than a quarter said they liked visiting their doctor (29 percent), and a similar proportion (26 percent) claimed they didn’t understand AI enough to adopt it.

The survey asked participants to imagine their provider gave them access to new AI-powered services. Respondents said they would utilize the technology to get information after-hours or when a medical appointment wasn’t readily available (67 percent), to help navigate health services (63 percent) and for advice about lifestyle habits (58 percent).
