Tech company reveals plans for Clara—the AI-driven imaging supercomputer

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, a California-based technology company, recently revealed plans to construct a medical imaging supercomputer affectionately named Clara, according to HPCwire.

The announcement came at the tech company’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC) in Silicon Valley. Huang said the new computer will house medical imaging-specific software that will provide Clara’s infrastructure.

Huang said the image analysis could be deployed in data centers or the cloud. Nvidia is working with several partners on this project, including Mayo Clinic and Samsung.

“The unfortunate thing is there around three million medical instruments installed, but only 100K sold each year. It would take 30 years to update everything,” Huang said in his keynote address. “To avoid this we have an initiative for Project Claraa virtualized data center, remote, multi-modality, multi-user. It’s a medical imaging supercomputer. It’s possible now for us to virtually update every system that’s out there.”
