ACR launching radiology education campaign
The ACR plans to launch a “Face of Radiology” campaign to educate patients, payors, government officials and other healthcare providers on what radiologists do, and why their education, training, skills and experience are vital in patient care.

This comprehensive effort, which is scheduled to begin in early 2008, will utilize grassroots efforts, advertising, public relations, patient education materials and social media. The goal is to deliver the message to patients that “your radiologist is the physician expert in diagnosis, patient care and treatment through medical imaging,” according to the association.

“We need to help all healthcare stakeholders, from patients to Congress, better understand what radiologists are and what they do, so that patients can make more informed healthcare choices and payors can better understand how their coverage decisions affect patients’ ability to receive the highest quality care,” said Arl Van Moore, Jr., MD, chair of the ACR board of chancellors.

Moore said the campaign will encompass not only targeted advertising and media relations efforts, but will provide a multitude of patient education materials, both print and electronic, for radiologists to personally educate their patients.

The ACR also plans to provide a series of videos for radiologists to use in their offices and waiting rooms, to provide patients with the knowledge that the radiologist serves an important role in their healthcare.
