Aetna tests P4P program in Washington hospitals
Aetna will launch a pay-for-performance (P4P) program for hospitals in two areas of Washington state: Puget Sound and Spokane.

The payor has licensed the Leapfrog Hospital Rewards Program (LHRP), a national model for P4P programs from the Leapfrog Group, a Washington, D.C.-based patient safety advocacy organization sponsored by employers.

The Leapfrog Group said its LHRP measures the quality of care and the efficiency with which hospitals use resources in clinical areas that represent a significant portion of hospital admissions and expenditures among the commercially-insured population. The program utilizes a standardized methodology to assess the value of patient care by measuring performance along two dimensions – the quality of the care hospitals provide and how effectively they deliver it, according to the organization. The methodology employs nationally accepted quality measures endorsed by the National Quality Forum and collected and reported by the Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
