Aperio granted U.S. CAD patent
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted the digital pathology provider Aperio Technologies the patent number 7,116,440, which covers systems and methods for image pattern recognition using vector quantization.

The Vista, Calif.-based Aperio reported that the image pattern recognition technology covered by the patent is based on the application of vector quantization, a technique used for the compression of data streams.

The company said that it believes that computer-based image pattern recognition, also referred to as computer-aided detection (CAD) in related fields like radiology, will become increasingly important in digital pathology.

The patent portfolio includes more than 30 issued, licensed or pending patents covering the creation, viewing, analysis and management of digital slides, according to Aperio.
