ASTRO board member to serve on CMS committee
The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) announced this week that Michael S. Steinberg, MD, has been appointed to serve a two-year term as a voting member on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC).

As part of the MCAC, ASTRO said Steinberg will participate in six to 10 committee meetings per year. The committee is composed of 100 appointed members selected for their qualifications and expertise in one or more of the following fields: clinical medicine, administrative medicine, public health, epidemiology and biostatistics, methodology of trial design, biologic and physical sciences, health care data information management and analysis, the economics of healthcare, medical ethics and other related medical professions.

The committee is broken up into groups of six that are then designated specific topics from an agenda. ASTRO said Steinberg will help to conduct reviews of medical literature, execute technical assessments and evaluate specific data sets on topics regarding effective and appropriate medical services, and items covered or eligible under Medicare.

Steinberg currently practices at the Santa Monica Cancer Treatment Center in Santa Monica, Calif. He is an elected member of the ASTRO Board of Directors and has been active in the organization since 1981.
