CAD is making its mark
CAD Sciences Full-Time-PointCAD Sciences (Booth #3576) is releasing Server 2.4 of its Full-Time-Point MR image postprocessing engine and WorkSpace 2.1, a streamlined MR image viewer that facilitates the analysis of fTP colorized images and quantitative output data. Together, these two products are the next generation of the company’s advanced pharmacokinetic analysis software tools that assist the radiologist with lesion identification, characterization, and diagnosis reporting. This radiology software offers one-click lesion diagnosis reporting in conjunction with the ability to monitor vascular permeability over time in lesions treated with radiation, hormonal therapy, or chemotherapy. These capabilities have been integrated into an advanced workflow roadmap regime that guides the radiologist through the series of sequential tasks that must be performed to arrive at a diagnosis.

Workspace 2.1 offers one-click lesion diagnosis reporting, permitting the radiologist to identify lesions and generate diagnosis reports with graphical and quantitative analysis of tissue biology. These reports include numerical measurements of vascular permeability and cellular density, considered key physiological indicators of cancer, as well as standard contrast wash-in and wash-out measurements. Users may select a lesion for analysis by simply pointing and clicking on a region of interest. Statistical analysis of the lesion may be performed in 2D or 3D.

Confirma (Booth #6741) is highlighting CADstream — CAD for MRI. CADstream automates the processing of MRI studies, providing higher-quality imaging studies, lower costs for radiology practices, and improved communication tools for physicians and patients. In its initial application, CADstream is being used to assist in the analysis, interventional guidance, and reporting of breast MRI studies.

EDDA Technology IQQA-ChestEDDA Technology (Booth #3271) is highlighting IQQA-Chest, debuting IQQA-Chest Enterprise, and showing IQQA-Liver. IQQA-Chest offers real-time interactive diagnostic analysis of digital chest x-rays using a comprehensive set of tools to support radiologists in their identification, confirmation, and quantification of lung nodules. Targeting lesions in the range of 5 mm to 15 mm, IQQA-Chest has clinically demonstrated an ability to improve radiologists’ detection rates up to 85 percent. In identifying and confirming nodules, physicians are able to use lesion-specific image enhancement viewing modes that dynamically detail image structures and highlight suspicious areas. Once suspect nodules are identified and marked by physicians, the software offers regional analysis tools for the quantification of lesion characteristics.

IQQA-Chest Enterprise aims to redefine how advanced clinical applications can and should be accessed by radiologist. Up to now, radiologists have simply had to accept that the use of advanced imaging software meant they would have to operate at dedicated workstations detached from their primary PACS review stations. Although static image results could be sent from these standalone workstations back to a PACS workstation for review, it was not possible to access the full functionality of these advanced applications at the PACS viewing station. EDDA has developed an enabling solution capable to instantly deploy the full functionality of the IQQA-Chest application on PACS workstations.

IQQA-Liver provides radiologists with a tool to review all acquired phases simultaneously with automatic anatomic phase registration. It also provides segmentation and measurement tools for visualizing and analyzing liver lesions and vascular structures to support liver disease diagnosis and preoperative assessment and planning. IQQA-Liver is approved by the Chinese regulatory agencies and is currently undergoing regulatory review by the FDA.

Hologic (Booth #7730), following its acquisition of R2 Technology, is featuring applications software tools including Citra that are being fully integrated into the Hologic line of multi-modality breast imaging workstations. Citra brings physicians a universal and “CAD-intelligent” system for reviewing digital mammography images and, if needed, comparing them with digitized prior film images. And Citra optimizes R2 CAD mark and R2 CAD information display to assist the radiologist in review and decision-making, while streamlining workflow.

Hologic also is highlighting the full line of R2 ImageChecker CAD systems, including version 2.1 of its ImageChecker CT lung CAD system, with additional PACS integration and updates to the pulmonary artery PE tool. This latest software aims to increase physicians’ capabilities in disease detection, including pulmonary artery filling defects, such as pulmonary emboli, during review of multidetector CT exams.

iCAD SecondLookiCAD (Booth #6913) is demonstrating its SecondLook products, which have recently been upgraded with the newly released CAD software version 7.2, an algorithm that automatically identifies and marks areas typically associated with cancer. The CAD software marks the primary indications of breast cancer in a consistent, logical manner that is closely aligned with standard mammography training. iCAD also is highlighting its recent agreement with Fujifilm Medical Systems USA to offer iCAD products through their U.S. sales channels. The company has made a series of partnerships with digital mammography companies including GE and Siemens.

Eastman Kodak Co.  (Booth #3700) is debuting a CAD system for its CR-based mammography platforms as a works-in-progress. The company has offered mammography functionality as an optional feature on its KODAK DIRECTVIEW CR 850, CR 950 and CR 975 Systems outside the United States and Canada since May of 2005. It is currently pursuing regulatory approval for its mammography feature within the United States and Canada. When this CR-based CAD system is available, Kodak will offer an integrated single-vendor solution for digital mammography.

Median LMS-LungMEDIAN Technologies (Booth #4587) is unveiling its works in progress Lesions Management Solutions (LMS) including LMS-Lung, LMS-Colon, and LMS-Liver. These applications promise to provide clinicians with automatic tools to support image visualization, lesions detection, quantification, volume growth assessment, and automatic reporting on CT scans. All LMS applications have been designed to be fully integrated in clinical routine and are available on various enterprisewide environments including PACS workstations.

LMS-Lung is a software application for the evaluation of chest CT images, providing clinicians with intuitive tools to support the identification, characterization, evolution, and reporting of lung lesions. LMS-Lung has been successfully introduced in clinical routine at several European radiology facilities and is pending FDA clearance.

LMS-Colon is a complete software solution for the interpretation of CT colonography images. The application provides clinicians with tools to support the identification, visualization, characterization, and reporting of polyps and masses in the colon. LMS-Colon is an intuitive, affordable solution for radiology facilities whatever their volume of CT colonography procedures.

LMS-Liver is a software application that helps the radiologist in the quantification and follow-up over time of hepatic lesions in CT scans. Radiologists using LMS-Liver can assess response to treatment of solid tumors by computing automatically RECIST criteria for each target lesions.

Riverain RapidScreenRiverain Medical (Booth #4165) is showcasing enhancements to its RapidScreen x-ray-based lung CAD system. The FDA-PMA approved RapidScreen chest x-ray CAD system assists radiologists in the detection of early-stage lung cancer by identifying solitary pulmonary nodules between 9 mm and 30 mm and other suspicious nodules on the original standard AP/PA chest x-ray. RapidScreen is used with the radiologist’s existing workstation, eliminating the need for a separate workstation. Riverain Medical is demonstrating further advancements in RapidScreen’s sensitivity and specificity and showing lateral CAD chest images, further improving the ability to detect early-stage lung cancer, especially in the difficult area partially hidden by the heart. Finally, Riverain Medical is demonstrating the ability for universal connectivity with PACS.
