Cerner enters into healthcare device arena with CareAware line
Cerner Corp. unveiled its plans to enter into the healthcare device manufacturing and connectivity markets with its first line, CareAware, at HIMSS 06 last week in San Diego. The line will include medical products, software and connectivity tools that fit in with the company’s goal to help healthcare professionals eliminating errors and improving effectiveness, the company said.

The CareAware devices will integrate with Cerner’s Millennium system architecture. Millennium helps caregivers manage patients' information and treatments, to foster collaboration among departments and reduce data duplication and other problems.

Cerner’s first effort in this new series is the CareAware RxStation, a collection of devices designed for the medication process. The RxStation includes automated dispensing machines with supporting systems that will link with the Cerner Millennium software, connecting information from a patient's medical history directly with the clinicians and the pharmacy, Cerner said.

The first implementation of the CareAware RxStation devices will begin this summer at Sun Health in Phoenix, Ariz., a non-profit community healthcare network offering acute, long-term, residential and home-delivered healthcare and related services.

The healthcare IT provider is also working together with several device manufacturers to develop integrated clinical data delivery mechanisms, allowing interoperability between Cerner Millennium technology and healthcare providers' hardware.
