Cisco joins CalRHIO to build HIE
Cisco Systems will participate in the California Regional Health Information Organization's (CalRHIO) effort to build a statewide health information exchange (HIE).

CalRHIO already has contracts with Medicity and Perot Systems to develop a system that will eventually enable healthcare providers in California to share medical records and information. Hewlett Packard is also a partner.

The nonprofit CalRHIO is currently working to secure private capital for the $300 million project, which is expected to take several years.

The San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco brings industry relationships and experience developing health information systems, according to CalRHIO. The organization also anticipates that Cisco will encourage other companies to participate in the initiative.
