CNSC signs protocol for AECL licensing activities
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has signed protocol for National Research Universal (NRU) licensing activities with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).

The protocol defines a framework within which the CNSC staff will provide regulatory expectations to AECL. CNSC said its staff also will assess information submitted by AECL to determine whether the NRU reactor can continue operation beyond its current license period, and make recommendations to the commission regarding the renewal of the NRU's license.

The NRU's current license expires in October 2011.

“CNSC is conducting its licensing activities with a best effort to minimize any disruption of the production of medical isotopes,” said Michael Binder CNSC president.
