Exavera Technologies Inc. is debuting eShepherd, a secure broadband wireless information-delivery system that is designed specifically for healthcare at the TEPR 2004 meeting in Orlando, Fla., this week.

eShepherd combines a high-speed WiFi (802.11a/b/g) network with the Vera-T family of intelligent bracelets, staff badges and asset tags based on wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. It works with existing hospital information systems (HIS) to provide positive patient identification; location of patients, staff and assets; and information delivery at the bedside point-of-care.

Unlike bar coded patient bracelets, eShepherd's RFID bracelets contain a subset of the patient's electronic medical record, including a photograph for positive identification and medical history such as insurance information, vital signs, physician contact data and current medications. In addition, the bracelet communicates automatically with the HIS through Exavera's wireless broadband premise router.
