GE Healthcare has agreed to purchase Whatman, a British laboratory equipment maker, for $713 million (£363 million) to boost its life sciences business.

The two companies expect the transaction to close in the second quarter of 2008.

Joe Hogan, president and CEO of GE Healthcare, said Whatman's filtrations products for laboratory, research, life sciences and medical technology applications were highly complementary to GE's offerings.

“Life Sciences is a key area of growth for GE Healthcare and expanding our skill base and product offerings in this area supports our vision of helping our customers to diagnose and treat disease earlier,” he said.
