Guam HIE plan approved
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has approved Guam’s strategic operation plan for Health Information Exchange (HIE). Guam can now access approximately $1.6 million in grant money within the next four years to create and operate the exchange.

In March 2010, the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT awarded Guam $1.6 million to produce a strategic and operational plan for HIE and to implement health IT throughout the territory's healthcare industry as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009’s HITECH provision.

In January, Hielix and partners Mednet and Public Consulting Group (PCG) were awarded a contract to develop a strategic and operational plan to support an HIE for the U.S. territory.

The plan describes the strategies and activities necessary to advance adoption of EHRs and to establish an interoperable exchange of patient health information, both within the Territory of Guam and also with other states and territories, according to Hielix.
