Healthcare IT Bridges the Clinical Workflow Divide

Streamlining workflow processes across the enterprise to increase efficiency and better care has always been the focus of healthcare IT vendors, and this year’s RSNA is no exception. Vendors are offering a variety of web-based solutions that close the loop on clinical and business operations such as patient scheduling, diagnostic reporting and virtual worklists.

Amicas (Booth 7128) is showcasing three tools to help streamline workflow—Amicas Financials, Documents and Dashboards. Amicas Financials automates the identification and management of denials and follow-up workflows for revenue cycle management. Amicas Documents is designed to facilitate compliance with the privacy and security guidelines mandated by HIPAA. Dashboards allows access to data for clinical and operational performance metrics.

Amirsys (Booth 2801) is featuring its new STATdx premier integrated diagnostic decision support system. STATdx, an imaging point-of-care, diagnostic clinical decision support system, streamlines workflow by reducing the time required to research and complete a difficult imaging analysis.

Candelis (Booth 1509) is introducing its ImageGrid Integrated Radiology and Mammography Workstation, a thin-client appliance PC designed for radiology and mammography applications. The ImageGrid technology suite includes the ImageGrid PACS Web Viewer, ImageGrid PACS Mammography Web Viewer and ImageGrid PACS Referring Physician Viewer.

Carestream Health (Booth 8342) is unveiling its new SuperPACS Architecture to connect disparate PACS at multiple sites throughout a healthcare system. Shown as a works in progress, the architecture will communicate with existing PACS from multiple vendors to create an enterprise-wide PACS that will offer a unified, common worklist.

The new release features a full integration with GE Healthcare’s Centricity PACS and also includes full integration with PowerScribe speech recognition software. Other new features include the Order Management Module (OM2) module, which automatically creates an electronic order in cases where there is no RIS. A Study Forward feature enables users to pass studies to specialists or colleagues for consultations.

Double Black Imaging (Booth 4676) is featuring an updated DICOMetrix, a proactive DICOM image flow and network performance monitoring solution. The new images per minute (IPM) feature allows for user-controlled monitoring on the enterprise version in IPM in addition to images per second (IPS). The IPM feature is beneficial for monitoring slower modalities and slower inter-facility connections in a PACS enterprise that are typically approximately 1 IPS, the company says. Monitoring in IPM makes setting baseline and alert settings easier and more accurate.

DICOMetrix is a resource tool that allows PACS administrators, directors and IT personnel to monitor and track system performance and alert radiology and PACS support staff about system slow-downs and outages. DICOMetrix is a three-tiered software package. The first tier is a client that sits at the workstation level (Rad station, modality, CD burner, Rimage and film scanners) and monitors how fast the images are coming into that station. The second tier is the DICOMetrix Server that resides on the DICOM Server and monitors IPs sending into this server as well as outgoing traffic. The third tier is a new web-based enterprise solution that monitors all clients and servers in one easy to access location.

Eclipsys (Booth 7321) is showcasing its Sunrise Enterprise suite of solutions that help integrate clinical and financial outcomes at key points throughout the healthcare continuum, including outpatient care and communicating with patients at home. Eclipsys Revenue Cycle Solutions help organizations manage the business of healthcare.

Exogen Healthcare (Booth 5465) is showcasing Blue Ocean, a software solution that enables the coordination of care between patients, clinicians and critical assets. The solution aggregates information from disparate information systems, performs event correlation, and delivers real-time, actionable information at the critical point in patient care. For example, a clinician can treat a stroke patient within minutes of presenting in the ED, an interventional radiologist may have instant knowledge on the status of his patient, associated lab results and equipment, and a radiology administrator may have full visibility on his staffing needs to cover the upcoming surgery schedule, the company says.

Foresight Imaging (Booth 7636) is displaying version 2.2 of its TIMS DICOM System.  Version 2.2 includes audio recording and annotation, audio playback, TIF and JPEG 2000 file import, DICOM send lists, and study editing improvements.

mPlexus (Booth 9551) is introducing version 2.0 of its DICOM router product, DICOM eXtender. The mPlexus DICOM eXtender 2.0 features include DICOM header manipulation; DICOM study import, edit and route; route priority; transmission throttling; basic prefetching; diagnostic quality viewer; enhanced disk space management; and archive functionality.

McKesson Corporation (Booth 8328) is spotlighting its enterprise image management and workflow solutions in the areas of radiology, cardiology, endoscopy, revenue and resource management for healthcare organizations. The company’s enterprise medical imaging solutions can help end-users speed the diagnostic process, from order entry to results distribution, and increase billing accuracy.

Merge Healthcare (Booth 4058) is showcasing MergeCOM-3 version 3.8, available for Windows and Linux operating systems and programming in C/C++, C#.Net and Java. Release 3.8 introduces support for DICOM standard supplements, as well as improved multi-threading capability and compression support. Cedara OpenEyes image processing, visualization and manipulation platform can help developers create clinical applications (.NET or JAVA, data model based paradigm, XML), enabling acceleration of application development via plug-and-play imaging development tools, that include technology for 2D, 3D and 4D visualization, Merge says.

Mammography Reporting Systems (Booth 3605) is highlighting its Scheduling Matrix and Resource Tracker (SMaRT), MRS Secured Access and MRS Quest. SMaRT schedules patients with a few clicks, as well as ensuring that all equipment, rooms and staff needed for each appointment are available. The system operates on an unlimited matrix that allows every resource in a practice in the system, the company says. Secured Access enables patient results to be accessed via the internet in HIPAA-compliant way. The web-based technology improves on existing email patient communication with a unique registration procedure and monitoring system. With MRS Quest, patient demographic information can be input directly into a digital tablet. Additionally, it has a security feature that restricts access via a password log-in, MRS says.

NeoTool (Booth 2548) is spotlighting the latest release of NeoIntegrate. The product introduces new code set translation features for healthcare providers that deal with multiple code sets.

Nuance Healthcare (Booth 6215) is showcasing enhancements to RadCube for Radiology, the data mining and outcomes analysis package that integrates with existing RIS and Nuance’s reporting solutions, Veriphy, its critical test result management (CTRM) solution, and the newest release of RadPort for Radiology, its integrated decision support application for appropriate exam ordering.
