Industry news: Cedara, Desert Radiologists, Dynamic, Medical Records Institute, Merge, Vital

A new tool under development by Cedara Software Corp. was used in a study published in this week's issue of Cancer Research journal. I-Response is being developed by Cedara in conjunction with researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center who have identified a new imaging technique that can measure effectiveness of treatment for prostate cancer that has spread to the bones.

The technique, called functional diffusion map, uses an MRI scan and Cedara's I-Response to measure diffusion of water within tumors. The study tracked the diffusion of water through cells over the course of treatment. Tumor cells slow the movement of water.  As tumor cells die, water diffusion increases.

Study author Brian D. Ross, PhD, said there is currently no way to detect bone tumor response to therapy. The functional diffusion map could serve as an early biomarker indicating that a tumor is responding to treatment, thus helping patients make decisions about switching to an alternative therapy without wasting time on a treatment that is not working, Ross said.
