Industry round-up: A.D.A.M., A-Life Medical, Eastman Kodak, iCAD, IHE, NeuroLogica, Thomson Micromed
A-Life Medical, a provider of Natural Language Processing (NLP) for the healthcare industry, appointed Thomas D. Bang as president and chief executive officer. Bang has held executive level positions in prominent businesses throughout his 30-year career, including the Pyxis Corporation (Cardinal Health); MediTROL Automation Systems (Owen Healthcare); Baxter International and American Hospital Supply Corporation.


Eastman Kodak inked a new contract with Amerinet for laser imagers, laser media and radiographic film. Under the three-year deal, Amerinet—a leading group purchasing organization (GPO) that serves as purchasing agent for its member hospitals—will offer KODAK medical imaging products to its membership that includes hospitals, outpatient imaging centers and private physician offices. The agreement runs through December 30, 2009.

In other Kodak news, the company has recently signed contracts for its KODAK CARESTREAM Radiology and KODAK CARESTREAM Information Management Solutions at assorted U.S. healthcare facilities. Some facilities also purchased KODAK services to facilitate network design and perform data migration. The facilities include:
  • Heartland Regional Medical Hospital (Marion, Ill.) ordered a KODAK CARESTREAM PACS and CARESTREAM Information Management Solutions;
  • Madison County Memorial Hospital (Winterset, Iowa) ordered a KODAK CARESTREAM PACS and Kodak’s Network Design and Data Migration Services;
  • Orthopaedic Center of the Rockies (Fort Collins, Colo.) ordered a KODAK CARESTREAM PACS;
  • University of Illinois (Urbana, Ill.) ordered a KODAK CARESTREAM PACS, CARESTREAM Hosted Information Management and Kodak’s Data Migration services;
  • Via Health Network (Wayne, N.Y.) ordered CARESTREAM RIS and CARESTREAM PACS, CARESTREAM Information Management Solutions and two KODAK DIRECTVIEW CR 975 Systems.

iCAD announced that Steven Rappaport, a partner with RZ Capital, LLC, and Dr. Lawrence Howard, general partner of Hudson Ventures, L.P. have been appointed to its Board of Directors. Since July 2002, Rappaport has been a partner of RZ Capital, LLC, a private investment firm.  Since March 1997, Howard has been a general partner of Hudson Ventures, L.P. (formally known as Hudson Partners, L.P.) as well as a managing member of Hudson Management Associates LLC, a limited liability company that provides management services.


The eighth annual Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Connectathon is just around the corner. To be held in Chicago Jan. 15-19, 2007, the event will feature 75 leading healthcare IT companies testing how well their healthcare applications share patient information. This is an important step toward interoperability that will streamline the flow of clinical information across the entire healthcare continuum and speed implementation of a truly connected health system, IHE said. This year’s event is sponsored by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC). The event focuses on educating healthcare organizations, health information exchanges (such as RHIOs), government contracting decision makers and other end users on interoperability and information sharing. It includes presentations and panel discussions by key leaders in deploying national health information networks.


NeuroLogica Corporation, a neuroscience-based medical imaging company, announced that its CereTom has been installed at the Cleveland Clinic. The CereTom is a portable and wireless head and neck mobile CT scanner. Cleveland Clinic is known for its exceptional neurology department. The CereTom adds a new dimension of accessibility for its patients, who will benefit from its mobility. The CereTom can be brought bedside into a patient's room, the intensive care unit, operating room, emergency room and is able to provide top quality images immediately to maximize the standard of care for patients.


Thomson Micromedex and A.D.A.M., a provider of consumer health information, announced today that the companies have formed an alliance to provide consumer-oriented health, drug, and lab information to hospitals, health plans, health web portals, and pharmaceutical companies. 

The companies will co-develop new integrated solutions that combine A.D.A.M.’s health information with evidence-based drug information from Thomson to help patients better understand medical conditions and treatments.  The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Recent statistics reveal more than 60 percent of consumers have searched for information to help make treatment decisions in the last year, and about one-third of them indicate this information has affected either their treatment decisions or choice of facility,” said Jay Katzen,  senior vice president of marketing and business development at Thomson. “By combining A.D.A.M.’s suite of multimedia health information and health risk assessments with authoritative drug information and treatment option tools from Thomson, we are providing healthcare organizations with resources to improve the quality and delivery of educational information that consumers rely on to proactively manage their care.” To be available in Q1, the health education information resource will feature a comprehensive illustrated health and drug encyclopedias, a drug interaction checker, personalized health risk assessment tools, and interactive treatment option tools. Healthcare organizations can integrate these solutions with web portals and hospital information systems and customize them to reflect their unique brand identity, according to the companies.
