Jeffrey E. Shuren named as FDA CDRH director
Jeffrey E. Shuren, MD, has been named the director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the FDA.

The CDRH is responsible for assuring the safety, effectiveness and quality of medical devices as well as assuring the safety of radiation-emitting products and fostering device innovation.

Shuren has held various policy and planning positions within the FDA from 1998 to 2009. Beginning in September 2009, Shuren served as the acting center director before being named the CDRH director.

Shuren’s accomplishments at the FDA include:
  • Reauthorization of the Medical Device User Fee Act;
  • Development of FDA’s Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Strategic Plan;
  • Development of FDA’s Counterfeit Drug Task Force Report; and
  • Development of the Interagency Food Safety Working Report to the President.
