McKesson highlights NHIN participation
Last month the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was shown how clinicians at FirstHealth of the Carolina will utilize McKesson's HorizonWP Physician Portal for care support. The demonstration was part of a forum held in Washington, D.C. during which McKesson and FirstHealth collaborated as part of the IBM-led consortia in its prototype health information network demonstration.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas is a private, non-governmental, not-for-profit healthcare network serving 15 counties in the mid-Carolinas. During the live scenario, forum participants saw how a physician within the network can quickly obtain medical history from any source, in any community, using HorizonWP Physician Portal. Using the tool, a caregiver simply types the arriving patient's identifying information into a search module within McKesson's portal. Soon after, the physician securely retrievs and reviews health records from unaffiliated New York healthcare providers with registered records in the IBM-led NHIN (National Health Information Network) prototype, McKesson said.

"This demonstration shows how we can take patient care information from virtually any community and provide it at the point of care where the patient and physician need it. This technology will ensure that our residents, visitors, patients and families can enjoy an improved quality of life resulting from their healthcare experience here at FirstHealth of the Carolinas," said Dave Dillehunt, chief information officer. He added that physicians at their facility have rapidly adopted the McKesson system “so it's only natural that information obtained from providers in other communities also be made available through their personalized portal."

For McKesson’s part, its “mission is to help our healthcare partners and their clinicians achieve optimal performance," said Duncan James, group president, Health Systems, McKesson Provider Technologies. "McKesson's collaboration and proactive involvement in industry initiatives such as this one exemplify our commitment to seamless delivery of healthcare information for informed decision-making."
