NetApp highlighted at RSNA 2006 its disk-to-disk (D2D) technology – the NearStore Virtual Tape Library (VTL) - which is a backup appliance that appears as a tape library to a PACS application.

According to NetApp, the NearStore VTL system for PACS addresses three key concerns for PACS administrators: increasing performance and reliability of backup windows, simplifying backup management, and reducing D2D storage costs by up to 67 percent through the use of high-performance disk compression.
