New Products: AccuSoft, Cedara, EMC, ScImage, TeraMedica, Thinking Systems
AccuSoft Corporation announced that it is shipping new releases of three of its ImageGear imaging toolkits for software developers. ImageGear Professional version 15, ImageGear Enterprise version 15, and ImageGear MD version 15 offer many new features, including JPIP compression streaming protocol support, the ability to read and write vector data, enhancements to PDF file editing, medical waveform support and others. In addition, these toolkits support the upcoming Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. As a result, developers can create their imaging applications with the security of knowing they will not need to be modified for the future Vista release. All three ImageGear toolkits are available immediately. New features in the toolkits include:
  • Support for the JPIP protocol, a compression streaming protocol that works with JPEG 2000 to produce an image using the least bandwidth required. This protocol is very useful in applications such as medical imaging where only a portion of an entire image is requested to be transferred.
  • The ability to read and display DICOM waveforms for ECG and HD modalities and also have access to the image’s data set. (ImageGear MD toolkit only)
  • Additional functionality around Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), an XML markup language for describing two-dimensional vector graphics. Version 15 products now support rendering solid 3D vector data with adjustable lighting as well as wireframe 3D vector data with no lighting. In addition, developers can create applications that both read and write to SVG.
  • The ability to convert scanned pages into PDF-searchable text by applying optical character recognition (OCR) to the text images and converting them into normal text.
  • Additional flexible annotation marks, including text, line, freehand polyline, rectangle, ellipse, polygon, polyline, audio, image, ruler, protractor, encryption, button, hot spot and rich text. Version 15 of all three toolkits also include the ability to import and export these marks to XML files.
  • Additional PDF annotations, such as free text, polygon, polyline, square, circle, line and links to another page in the document.
  • The capability to turn on/off CMYK channels as well as Pantone spot colors in a PDF document.
  • Enhanced support for the standard CAD drawing file format, DWG, and its ASCII variant, DXF. Also, support for the R16 version of AutoCAD’s DWG and DXF drawing format & the ability to write as well as read these file types. Developers can create cost-effective applications that allow users to annotate and collaborate with CAD drawings without the need to purchase a CAD software package.
  • Automated notification when users approach their concurrent usage limits. This feature is flexible such that it can be set at any percentage of maximum usage. (ImageGear Enterprise toolkit only)
  • Support for reading additional file formats, including HPGL, DGN, and writing to CGM.
  • Support for loading raw file formats for over 90 different digital cameras. New cameras supported in release 15 include the following:
    • Canon EOS 30D
    • Canon EOS 20Da
    • Kodak P850
    • Kodak P880
    • Nikon 200D
    • Sony DSC-R1

Cedara Software will demonstrate its new C4 (Cedara Clinical Control Center) integration platform, a system that allows OEM companies to tightly integrate clinical applications into their existing solutions, at the upcoming RSNA convention in Chicago. Through a single integration effort, C4 allows companies to support diverse functionality for their customers including breast imaging, PET/CT, orthopedic planning, virtual colonoscopy, calcium scoring, oncology therapy response, and lung nodule analysis.

Cedara also will show new technologies for OEM/VARs designed to further unite image and information management Cedara also plans to introduce new solutions for integrated imaging workflow at the RSNA. The company will demonstrate a variety of systems that have been built using the Cedara OpenEyes development platform. OpenEyes packages connectivity, visualization and printing services in a flexible and transparent architecture that can be deployed across a wide spectrum of application environments.

EMC Corp. has released version 7.0 of the Rainfinity Global File Virtualization solution, extending EMC's market-leading capabilities in file virtualization and management to support enterprise archiving from heterogeneous file and network attached storage (NAS) systems to the EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) platform. The Rainfinity Global File Virtualization solution now offers customers a single platform to manage both active and inactive files throughout a file's lifecycle across heterogeneous environments.

ScImage will debut its single database driven multi-departmental workflow management system to increase efficiency, reduce cost and improve patient care at the upcoming RSNA convention in Chicago. Version 3.0 of the enterprise imaging solution, PicomEnterprise, has leapt from enterprise PACS to complete multi-department workflow system. The unified solution enables exams from multiple departments to be scheduled, tracked, reported, archived and distributed via a single web-based logon by employing a single database to organize varied data from each of these departments.

TeraMedica Healthcare Technology announced plans to contribute to an open source DICOM toolkit developed by a worldwide team of engineers.  “TeraMedica is planning on dedicating resources to the continued success of the DCM4CHE project” said Jim Prekop, TeraMedica CEO. “It makes good sense for the healthcare industry to have multiple vendors collaborating on something as fundamental as a DICOM toolkit.”  The open source DCM4CHE project was started in 2001 with the purpose of providing a high quality, high performance implementation of the DICOM standard and IHE actors using the Java programming language. The project has matured throughout the years, and its products are used by many institutions, projects, and vendors worldwide.

Thinking Systems released a new version of its ThinkingPACS that supports the new DICOM 3.0 2006 standard for hanging protocol.  ThinkingPACS supports a comprehensive list of modalities, such as general radiology (CT, MR, CR, and DR), PET-CT and SPECT-CT fusion, nuclear cardiology processing and analysis, general nuclear medicine processing and review, cardiac PET analysis, PET brain analysis, advanced 3D processing and visualization, calcium scoring, cardiac CTA, orthopedic templating, cardiac catheterization and angiography, echocardiography, general ultrasound, and mammography. “Together with DICOM presentation states, a hanging protocol ensures the maximum consistency across the enterprise when a study is viewed on different workstations by different readers,” said Xiaoyi Wang, president and co-chairman. “Most existing hanging protocols provided by various vendors were implemented using propriety techniques. The new DICOM 3.0 2006 standards establishes the official guidelines for hanging protocol implementation.  By supporting the new hanging protocol standards, Thinking Systems will provide interoperability with other systems that support the same standards,” he added.
