Philips to acquire Emergin to boost IT, monitoring
Dec. 4—Royal Philips Electronics will acquire Emergin, a Boca Raton, Fla.-based provider of software that transmit medical alarm signals throughout hospitals.

Philips said the transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2007, upon which Emergin will become part of the Patient Monitoring business unit within Philips’ Healthcare sector. Through the acquisition, Philips said it will expand the use of healthcare IT, specifically in its patient monitoring business.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Emergin’s alarm management and event notification software sends information to caregivers on the personal communication device of their choice, either a pager, wireless telephone, PDA or LED sign, according to Philips. The Dutch company also said that the acquisition of Emergin will enable Philips to integrate the functionality offered by Emergin’s software directly into its current and future patient monitoring products.
