RITA Medical Systems launches new IR device
RITA Medical Systems Inc. this week introduced its new StarBurst Semi-Flex flexible radiofrequency (RF) ablation device for interventional radiology.
The StarBurst Semi-Flex is designed for use during ablation procedures with MRI, CT and ultrasound and has received the CE mark for marketing in Europe. It also is cleared for use in the treatment of tumors of the liver, bone, and soft tissue by the FDA. The ablation device is 25 cm long and has more flexibility for deeper ablation for more centralized cancerous lesions.
RF ablation allows physicians to deliver radio frequency electrodes directly into cancerous tumors through a thin probe. The electrodes are introduced in a minimally invasive manner to heat and effectively destroy, or ablate, the targeted area.
