SonoSite introduces S-ICU ultrasound device
Hand-carried ultrasound system developer SonoSite unveiled its S-ICU product, an ultrasound device designed for intensive care physicians, at the American College of Chest Physicians annual meeting in Chicago this week.

The S-ICU, which weighs 8.35 pounds, features the company’s M-Turbo system optimized for point-of-care exams and procedures commonly performed in a hospital intensive care unit, SonoSite said.

At introduction, the S-ICU ultrasound tool offers a complement of phased, curved and linear array transducers to enable abdominal, cardiac and vascular scanning as well as visual guidance of PICC and central line placements, dialysis access, thoracentesis and paracentesis. The transducers are interchangeable with the M-Turbo system, and new image optimization algorithms are available on all S-ICU transducers and exam types.

The Bothell, Wash.-based firm said it expects to begin customer shipments of the product in the fourth quarter this year.
