New research suggests the use of advanced clinical systems, such as computerized practitioner order entry (CPOE) and clinical documentation, can help bring up care quality and can increase hospital revenues, according to a white paper from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and its subsidiary HIMSS Analytics. The study looked at care outcomes relative to EMR adoption at 107 medical centers that are members of the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). The study found that the 22 UHC hospitals with an EMR score of 4 or more (a score based on Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [AHRQ] quality indicators) have deployed digital technologies such as CPOE and clinical decision support systems. These EMR components were found to have had a significant and positive contribution to the quality of care and medical outcomes.
