Symbol introduces new wireless switch
Symbol Technologies Inc. launched its new high-capacity WS5100 enterprise wireless switch for large, campus-wide enterprise Wi-Fi deployments. The technology extends the functionality of Symbol's WS5000, released in September 2002

The WS5100 is well-suited for the healthcare industry, Symbol said. For example, in the healthcare industry, hospitals and clinics are looking to leverage wireless infrastructure to deploy mobile applications - such as medication administration, specimen collection, blood transfusion verification, asset and materials management, remote patient monitoring and nurse call - to enhance business operations efficiency and improve employee productivity. Hospitals believe that they can also improve the quality of patient care through the use of these applications, Symbol said.

The WS5100 offers more capacity for larger scale implementations. However, Symbol said the system remains easy to install and manage, while providing enhanced security.

The WS5100 is compatible with the software code, applications and network design of the Symbol WS5000, Symbol said. Offering ten times more throughput capacity and 60 percent more coverage than the WS5000, the new WS5100 maintains compatibility with existing wireless switch installations and Symbol's complete line of AP100, AP200 and AP300 thin access ports.

The new Symbol WS5100 will be shown for the first time at the 2005 Annual HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) show, Feb. 13 - 17, in Dallas.
