Varian receives FDA 510(k) clearance for Smart Segmentation Tool
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted medical technology manufacturer Varian Medical Systems a 510(k) clearance for its Smart Segmentation Tool, which the company said will enable clinicians to reduce the time needed to plan advanced treatments, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).

According to the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company, this new tool is fully automatic and uses intelligent software to identify and outline organs and other structures within diagnostic images of the thorax and male pelvis.

The tool enables clinicians to plan a wide array of radiation therapy treatments including IMRT, IGRT, stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy and proton therapy, Varian said.
