Zonare hits SonoSite with counter suit
After first being hit with a patent infringement lawsuit from SonoSite filed in a California district court, Zonare Medical Systems has fired back with a patent infringement counter claim. The claim, filed yesterday, alleges that SonoSite infringes Zonare's U.S. Patent No. 6,980,419, entitled "Portable Ultrasound Unit and Docking Station" filed in 2003.

The new suit seeks an injunction against future sales of infringing products, as well as damages for past sales, Zonare said.

SonoSite’s initial claim alleges that Zonare has infringed its Patent No. 5,722,412 through its sales of its z.one ultrasound platform, and similarly seeks monetary damages and a court injunction against future infringement.

"For nearly 10 years, we have invested heavily in this technology and we will vigorously protect our intellectual property and fully enforce our patent rights against any form of infringement,” said Donald Southard, president and CEO of Zonare.

For its part, SonoSite said it is in the process of reviewing Zonare’s response and expects to file a reply by April 4.
