GE makes two healthcare acquisitions
GE Healthcare has acquired MicroCal, a provider of instruments for the study of molecular interactions in pharmaceutical, biomedical and life science research, as well as Agility Healthcare Solutions, which focuses on hospital workflow and patient care management.

The financial terms of both transactions were not disclosed.

The company said the acquisition of MicroCal will allow it to expand its offering of technologies for the areas of protein science and drug discovery research. The Northampton, Mass.-based MicroCal manufactures microcalorimeters that provide information on the structure, function and binding properties of biomolecules, such as proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and antibodies, GE said.

MicroCal’s proprietary technology, which complements GE’s Biacore platform, provides scientists with detailed information across several stages of the drug discovery process, reducing the potential for late-stage drug candidate failures, according to the company.

Agility’s AgileTrac technology provides enterprise resource management, asset tracking and clinical workflow solution for the healthcare industry. The Glen Allen, Va.-based Agility will become part of GE’s diagnostic imaging services business, a provider of solutions enabling healthcare providers to achieve performance results through consulting and asset management offerings, the company said.

GE said that Agility offers a technology platform that provides enterprise visibility and management of patient flow, assets, beds and rooms, staff, emergency department activities, surgical services processes and other hospital resources and workflow in an integrated, modular application. The company’s turnkey technology offerings utilize real time location systems for automated data capture and display.
