ONCHIT could be looking at a 2007 budget cut
It seems the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT could be looking at a reduced budget in 2007. The Senate Appropriations Committee's Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee last week gave the OK to a fiscal budget for next year granting the ONCHIT $63.5 million, $52.6 million under what the White House had hoped for.

In response to Hurricane Katrina, the ONCHIT budget also has a $2 million earmark for the development of disaster-related electronic health record systems.

The final ONCHIT budget is not set in stone, however, and will be determined later this year by Congress.
