Siemens makes move to bolster European health IT presence
Siemens Medical Solutions this week announced it is buying Gesellschaft für Systemforschung und Dienstleistungen im Gesundheitswesen mbH (GSD), headquartered in Berlin. GSD has more than 300 customers in 14 countries, and is a leader in the area of health information systems (HIS). This is a bid by Siemens to strengthen its position in the health IT sector throughout Europe, especially in Germany and other European countries. The acquisition is still subject to approval by the antitrust authorities, Siemens said.

Once approved, the purchase will significantly grow the company’s current installed base of health IT systems in Germany and generally strengthening its position as a provider of HIS. Specific parts of the GSD portfolio, such as its i.s.h.med and Ambulatory Care Management (ACM) product lines will be a valuable asset to Siemens on the global health IT market, the company said.

In addition, GSD best practices and expert resources will play a key role in the further development of Siemens' Soarian health information solution for the European market, Siemens said.

After Diagnostic Products Corporation (DPC) and Bayer Diagnostics, the takeover of GSD is Siemens Medical Solutions' third acquisition in the past three quarters. In taking over GSD, Siemens is now also consistently pursuing its strategy of building the industry's first fully integrated diagnostics company that combines diagnostic imaging, laboratory diagnostics and clinical information technology under one roof.
