Radiologists average $401K a year, ranking 5th among specialists

Radiologists make an average of $401,000 a year, ranking as the fifth highest compensated medical specialists, according to Medscape's Physician Compensation Report 2018, which compiled survey results from more than 20,000 physicians in 29 clinical specialties.

The report, released April 11, covers annual salaries based on specialty versus primary care, race/ethnicity and specialization choice, gender wage gaps for primary care physicians versus specialists, and percentages of physicians dropping Medicare and Medicaid patients, among other areas.

"Over 470,000 physicians have used this report to access salary information as well as information on hours worked and the challenges they face in their jobs," the report stated.

Of the total 20,000 survey respondents, 4 percent identified as radiologists. Additionally, 66 percent of respondents were men and 34 percent women.

Additional results from the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2018 regarding radiology included:

  • Averaging $401,000 a year, radiologists ranked 5th among top-earning specialties, following gastroenterology, cardiology, orthopedics and plastic surgery. Radiologists earn an average of $5,000 more in compensation in 2018 compared to the previous year.
  • Among specialists, men earn an average $95,000 more than women—a 36 percent wage gap—consistent with the 2017 report.
  • Less than 20 percent of physicians are women, with ob/gyn and pediatrics dominating as the most popular specialties. Of that total, 15 percent reported specializing radiology.
  • Roughly 65 percent of radiologists reported feeling fairly compensated by their employer, a 3 percent increase from last year.
  • Approximately 96 percent of radiologists would choose the same specialty again, a 5 percent increase from last year.
