FDA clears Vital Images universal viewer

Vital Images, part of the Toshiba Medical Systems Group, has received FDA 510(k) clearance for 3D viewing through its universal viewer, VitreaView. The company simultaneously released its tablet viewing capabilities for VitreaView.

Introduced in June 2011, VitreaView is used as a communication tool for DICOM and non-DICOM medical images through a standardized viewer, giving clinicians access to these images through a variety of systems, including an EHR or health information exchange.

The technology allows access to multiple databases, providing a universal imaging layer at the enterprise level. VitreaView is designed to eliminate the need to integrate image viewing portals by providing one standardized imaging layer for referring clinicians, according to Minneapolis-based Vital.
