IBM Watson launches medical imaging initiative

When it comes to diagnosing heart disease, IBM Watson is launching its newest feature of its medical imaging initiative to lend a helping hand.

IBM Watson's clinical imaging review will now assess medical data such as images, ultrasounds, x-rays and anything else that is visual and used by medical professionals. The first step of its new move will be to sort out which patients need follow-up care for aortic stenosis (AS).

According to an interview with Mashable, cardiology specialist at Sentara Healthcare Jaime Murillo says, AS is one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose.

With Watson’s new imaging system, professionals will be able to look at an image of a mass and figure out if it’s a tumor, infection or anatomical quirk. They will also be looking at medical records to check for any errors or inconsistencies. If a flag is raised, the system will ask if a patient should come back in.

Watson Clinical Imaging Review will be the first cognitive imaging offered by IBM.
