Ultrasound making waves beyond medicine

What do acoustic holograms, tractor beams, glasses for the totally blind and Martian scanners all have in common?

All are advancing on the amazing versatility of ultrasound technology.

So too hands-free phones.

“We are on the brink of a real contactless alternative to touch-screen technology,” according to a listicle from TheConversation.com. “One company is using ultrasound to effectively create invisible [phone] buttons in the air that you can feel.”

It’s a quick and breezy read, but it’s supplemented with some cool videos and the material is interesting enough that Smithsonian has republished it:
