AECL repair is 43% complete, restart in April
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) said 43 percent of the repair activities of the Chalk River, Ontario-based National Research Universal (NRU) reactor has been completed and that the reactor is expected to return to service by the end of April.

The firm reported that "remote cleaning of the central area of the reactor vessel floor and repositioning of reactor core components in preparation for restart have been brought forward.” The next series will incorporate the installation of plates welded to the vessel wall combined with the application of horizontal weld build-up, according to AECL.

“Preparations for the final repair sequence are also underway,” said AECL. The welders continue intensive practice sessions using the NRU reactor mock-ups to qualify for this final repair sequence, according to AECL.
