Decoding dreams with fMRI

The prospect of being able to watch a person’s dreams could be viewed either as fascinating or unsettling.

Either way, that technology is a long way off. But scientists at the ATR Computation Neuroscience Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan, have found a way to predict what a person is dreaming about based on fMRI scans of dreamers. Study subjects were awoken from dreams, asked to describe what they were seeing in detail, and that information was matched with brain activity data that could later be used to “decode” future dreams.
