Florida cancer center plans treatment using Philips SmartArc
A patient treated at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla. has received the first-ever radiation treatment planned with Philips' Pinnacle3 SmartArc technology.

According to Philips, the SmartArc was used to plan the volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) that was dispensed using Palo Alto, Calif.-based Varian Medical Systems Trilogy linear accelerator and Stockholm, Sweden-based Elekta Impac Software’s MOSAIQ.

In addition, Phllips said that the SmartArc equipment has the capability to reduce treatment times by interchangeable gantry speeds and dose rates.

According to Moffitt, the technology will be utilized in other areas of the center’s cancer treatments including those affecting the heart, lungs, brain, prostate, head and neck.
