Thomson Reuters has released its annual study identifying the top 100 U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance, based on 10 specific benchmarks. Of note, the list does not include any facilities from New England, the Northwest region nor the state of New York.

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks study evaluates 10 performance areas, including: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

To conduct the study, Thomson Reuters, which is based in Ann Arbor, Mich., evaluated 2,926 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals. The researchers used public information, such as Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data set.
